John Wesley Akers was the son of James M. Akers, and his wife, Mary (Wright) Akers. He was born in Indiana, and moved with his family to Iowa in 1857. The family settled in Milo Township, Delaware County, Iowa, southeast of Manchester.
John W. Akers was just 18, and living in Delaware Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. B of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Feb 29, 1864. He was mustered into federal service on the same day.
Akers was captured in action on Dec 14, 1864, at White's Station, Tenn. He died in prison at Andersonville, Ga., April 25, 1865, and was buried in the National Cemetery, Andersonville, Ga., Grave #12,846.
In the list of deaths at Andersonville, compiled by fellow prisoner Dorance Atwater, Akers somehow became listed as a soldier from OHIO rather than Iowa.
His Mother (Mary Akers) applied for a pension on Aug 3, 1866. Her application is #131,099, and her certificate #140,903.
His Father (James M Akers) applied for a pension on June 16, 1892 from the state of IA. His application is #552,793, and his certificate #398,678.
Akers' brother-in-law, George W. Clapp, also from Delaware County, Iowa, was married to John W. Akers' older sister, Serilda Akers (#59591868).
Clapp was also a member of Co. B of the 4th Iowa Cavalry, and had been taken prisoner at the same time. Clapp was also at Andersonville, but was later paroled and survived the war. (#59591826)
