A.C. Putney, Lineman, is Fall Victim - East Galesburg Mayor is Fatally Hurt in High Line Tower Work Thursday
Alva C. Putney, 36, resident and mayor of East Galesburg, died at 4:30 this morning in the Monmouth hospital from injuries he received at 3:30 yesterday afternoon when he fell 44 feet from a "high line" tower on which he was working as lineman, two miles southwest of Monmouth. Putney was working with an Illinois Power and Light Company crew out of Galesburg when the accident occurred. The story of the fatal fall was pieced together at an inquest held this morning in the Lugg and Holliday Memorial chapel at Monmouth. Coroner Lenville Fey presiding, although no actual eye-witness saw Putney drop. The power naturally coursing through the wires was turned off at both Keokuk, point of origin, and Galesburg, and it is surmised that Putney received a shock from static electricity which gathers on the towers.
Carl Isaacson, Galesburg lineman, who was working on the same tower with Putney, testified that he heard his name called and turned to see his partner falling. The injured was rushed to the hospital in a semi-conscious condition, but died thirteen hours after the fall. Putney was born July 3, 1896 in Oquawka, and was married to Ida Schulz, who survives with two daughters.
