Loren 'Tom' Lane


Loren "Tom" Lane, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, mentor, teacher and friend, passed away suddenly April 8 at his home in Hebo at age 78.

Tom was born Dec. 7, 1931, in Hebo to Clyde and Bernice (Fletcher) Lane.

Tom attended Hebo Grade School and Nestucca High School, before starting his trucking career hauling hay with Ray Bones.

Tom served in the Army in 1951 as a tank mechanic.

After being honorably discharged in 1953, Tom returned home and married the love of his life, Velda Lee, on Nov. 17, 1956, in Cloverdale, where he began working for the State Highway Department, first on the road crew and then on the bridge crew.

After his employment with the State Highway Department, Tom drove a log truck and later purchased his own truck, which he operated for several years.

He drove truck for Noble Bitner Plug Company for several years and finally worked for the U.S. Department of Forestry on its road construction crew. He retired in 1994.

Tom loved to go hunting, fishing and clamming. He especially enjoyed watching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow.

Tom enjoyed his daily trips to the coffee shop with his sister, Carol, and many adventures with his son, Jay.

Tom was a member of the Oregon Hunters Association and a life member of the National Rifleman's Association.

He is survived by daughter Pam Peterson of Hebo and son Jay Lane and wife Denise of Hebo; brother Rick Lane and wife Donna of Hebo; sisters Wanona Wharton of Cloverdale and Carol Heinen of Beaver; six grandchildren, including MaRanda "Mandy" Wickham and husband Mike of Buckeye, Ariz., Nicole Troxel and husband Nick of Tillamook, Anna Wagner and husband Travis of Salem, Brandlyn "B.J." Harris of Forest Grove, Katie Lane and Jeff Geil of Pacific City, and Jason Lane of Gillette, Wyo.; great-grandchildren Taylor Geil, Kayden Wagner, Hanna Geil and Peyton Troxel; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Velda; his brother, Jerry Lane; his father, Clyde; and his mother, Bernice.

Memorial contributions may be made to Doernbecher's Children's Hospital.

A graveside service was held April 12 at Nestucca Valley Community Cemetery in Hebo.

Arrangements were by Waud's Funeral Home.
