Isabelle Lydia Yarosh, 90, co-founder of Assisi Animal Foundation in Crystal Lake, could be counted on to help animals in need.
"It was something she grew up with," said her daughter, Isabelle Linklater.
"As far as I can remember, she had stories of finding strays or sick animals and we would pick them up and take care of them."
Ms. Yarosh's love for animals eventually led her to establish a non-kill animal shelter with her daughter in the late 1980s.
Born in Ashley, Pa., Ms. Yarosh of Crystal Lake died of cancer Sunday, Apr. 11, in her home. She was raised in Detroit, where she studied piano and graduated with a bachelor's degree in music.
While working as a pianist during the late 1920s and early 1930s, she placed her career on hold after she met her late husband, Stanislaw P. Galazka, a foreign diplomat from Poland, whom she married in the late 1930s. He died during World War II as a member of the Polish resistance.
Ms. Yarosh became a single mother and worked as an executive assistant for a Chicago company for several years before going into real estate. During the 1970s, she opened Yarosh & Associates in Chicago, a company she ran until the mid-1980s.
She and her daughter then made their dream come true of opening an animal shelter. In addition to taking in stray animals, the shelter organizes educational safaris to eastern Africa and India. In 2000, Ms. Yarosh traveled with a group to Kenya and Tanzania and also went to India to see tigers.
There are no other immediate survivors. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Windridge Cemetery, 7014 Rawson Bridge Rd., Cary. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. in the cemetery.
