The Unionists organized many groups known as the Missouri Militia, with each group having a Captain who gave the orders, while the Confederates organized groups known as the Southern Secessionists. The Missouri Militia made it their concern to eradicate the area of the male adults who were sympathizers to the Southern cause. Just one year before the Civil War ended, Elijah Burris lost his life to the raiders.

On May 26, 1864, Elijah Burns was shot and killed as he sat on the front porch holding his five-month-old son, James. According to family stories, the raiders rode up to his home on horseback and announced that they were going to kill him. It was evident that the horsemen knew him when they said, "Lige, we have to kill you." Elijah answered them by saying, "Well, wait until I put the baby down." After taking the baby inside and returning to the porch, the threat was carried out and the men rode away. It was told that a farmhand, Jefferson Beasly, living in the Burris home, tried to follow the men at a safe distance, but soon lost sight of them. Elijah Burris was buried in the Antioch Cemetery located on the old Union Road.
