John Philip Dellinger, Jr. was a Captain in the Revolutionary War. He fought in the Battle of Ramseur's Mill in Lincolnton and the Battle of King's Mountain. He was a signer of the Tryon County Declaration of Rights and Independence from British Tyranny. His name is listed on the monument for the Signing of the Declaration.

He married Barbara Whitener/Weidner, daughter of Heinrich and Mary Catharina Muehl "Mull" Weidner. They were married on June 19, 1778 at Old St. Paul's Reformed Lutheran Church.

Thieves stole the plaque off the historic marker on Tryon Courthouse Road a few years ago. (2012) This marker is the one pictured here.

Those who commit such an abominable act show no respect for the freedom they enjoy because of the sacrifice of brave patriots who signed the Tryon Resolves.

Through these Tryon Resolves, men who lived in what would become Gaston County, North Carolina, made clear their commitment to live free from English King George’s rule.


The members of the William Chronicle Chapter of the DAR, collected money to replace the marker and have done so.
