Daniel was an honorable man. He loved his son, his family and his Harley. He was the eldest child of Charles and Roberta (Koons) Cain. He had one child, his son Uriah. He left two brothers (George and Dale)and one sister (Sally).
He believed in treating others the same way he wanted to be treated.
Daniel enlisted in the Marine Corp in 1969 after graduating from Alexander H. S. in Athens County, Ohio. He served for 4 years during the Vietnam War but was never sent overseas.
His son Uriah was born in 1974 in California where Daniel lived for a short while after leaving the Marine Corp. Daniel brought his family back to Ohio in 1975. He moved to the Outer Banks in N.C. in the late 1980s.
While on a weekend trip to Fayetteville, N.C. for a motorcycle rally, Daniel was murdered by a complete stanger who was selling drugs out of a motel where Dan was spending the night. An argument had occurred earlier in the day between the drug dealer and other guests at the motel who were attending the same rally. That night after the rally, unsuspecting guests returned to the motel. The drug dealer was hiding behind a pop machine with a gun. Dan surprised him. After he shot Dan at point blank range, he opened up on the returning crowd of people. An autopsy was performed on Daniel, there were no drugs in his system, this was not a drug deal gone bad.
The sheriff's department in Fayetteville arrested Orlander Johnson Jr. later that night and held him for 26 months awaiting trial. On the first day of the trial. their best witness cleared the defendant. Now 4 years later, they say that they believe that Orlander Johnson Jr. did commit the murder but they can't prove it. They so badly bungled the investigation, that they don't stand a snowball's chance in hell of solving it, so they aren't even trying.
