In 1885 the family left Nebraska for Washington, settling in Columbia County, then Kittitas County, then King County. In 1893 they came to Toledo in Lewis County where Francis worked at a shingle mill, and also ran a feed mill. In Toledo he owned and operated a meat market.

Francis M. Gowen, age 72, died suddenly last evening in his home on Route 1 at Chehalis.
Husband of Melissa (Champ) Gowen.
He came to Lewis County in 1893, where he was a prominent dairyman and farmer.
He was a member of the Grange and of the Modern Woodmen.
Interment in Claquato Cemetery.

Edward Otis THOMAS
who married Melissa Ellen CHAMP.
The two families resided at Silver Creek in Lewis County.
Sophronia became very ill and was bedridden; her sister-in-law, Melissa Ellen (Champ) Thomas cared for Sophronia for several months.
After the death of Sophronia, Melissa and Edward divorced.
Then Francis and Melissa married.
