Birch Junior Austin was born 17 Oct. 1924 in Illinois. He served in the 20th Army Air Corps in WWII. He was with the 58th BW Ordnance group, 462nd BG, 770th BS and a Staff Sgt. by the time he got out of the service. He then went back to San Diego, Ca. where he died four years later, when he was thrown from the rumble seat of a light car in a traffic accident on 22 Oct. 1949 at the age of 25 yrs. Birch, never married, but had one daughter who he saw for the last time when she was two years old and lived in Santa Barbara, Ca. at the time. He was known to his friends and family as "Sandy."
