Leo A. Bevins
Whitesboro - Leo A. Bevins, 85, of 10 Clinton St, Whitesboro, passed away unexpectedly, Friday, December 20, in Bedford, NH, while visiting his daughter.
He was born in Utica, December 5, 1902, the son of Peter and Eleanor Mahar Bevins. He received his education at St. Agnes Grade School and was a 1927 graduate of the Assumption Academy. In Our Lady of Lourdes Church July 18, 1932, Leo married Josephine O'Connor. Mrs. Bevins passed away January 26, 1985. For 50 years, Mr. Bevins was a jeweler, having been employed at the Oneida Watch Company and later at Baron's Gift Shop. For a time he was also employed as a security guard at the Munson Williams Proctor Institute. Mr. Bevins was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, the Holy Name Society, the Men's and Usher's Clubs of the Church, an honorary life member of the William E. Burke Utica Council 189 Knights of Columbus and its 4th Degree Assembly. Mr. Bevins was a member of the Troupe G. Calvary. He was also active in many other organizations.
Leo is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James (Patricia) Neary of Deerfield, and Dr. & Mrs. Thomas (Joan) Warren of Bedford, NH; one sister, Mrs. Mary L. Geer, of Utica; three brothers, Thomas P., of Seneca Falls, Maurice F., of Utica, and John W. of Whitesboro; eight grandchildren, Dr. James L. Neary, David M. Neary, Sheila M. Neary, Cathy A. Barr, Maureen O. Hobbes, Gretchen A. Neary, Teneke M. Warren and T. Anthony Warren; two great-grandchildren, Michael P. Neary and Katie Lynn Barr; a special niece, Carolyn Marsh. Mr. Bevins was predeceased by a daughter, Dorothy Hobbs [Hobbes] in 1983.
The funeral will be held Tuesday morning at 10:30 from The Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., and at 11 o'clock at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro. Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday evening 7-9 and Monday 2-4 and 7-9. Those so wishing may make donations to the charity of their choice in Mr. Bevins' name. The Knights of Columbus will meet at the funeral home Monday evening at 7:30.
