Grandmother Elizabeth was one of two daughters born to John Eck and his wife Mary. Being born in Bavaria, she was raised Catholic. When she was twenty years old, she left the Catholic Church and became a Methodist when she married Jonas Hess.
Since her father was Catholic and had only the two children—the other daughter Mary also having left the faith of her fathers and married a Protestant minister in 1846--Grandfather John gave a donation of $2000.00, a lot of money in those days, to the Catholic Church in St. Patrick, Missouri in reparation for his daughters’ sins.
Grandmother is buried in Forest Grove Cemetery in Canton, Missouri, beside her lifetime mate. She has few living descendants today.
