Officer Hector Ayala was killed in an automobile accident while responding to backup another officer at the scene of a fight in Wheaton. He was driving on Randolph Road when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree, causing fatal injuries.

Officer Ayala had served with the Montgomery County Police Department for seven years and was assigned to the Fourth District. He is survived by his expectant wife and 14-month old son.

Hector Ayala was killed in a car accident while responding to a call. He'll never meet his triplet daughters, born two months after he died and his son Hector Jr. will barely remember him.

But his wife Melissa hopes his name on the memorial will help visitors understand his sacrifice.

"They risk their life to keep us safe and they have families too," she says. "We the families, we just support them."
