MOTT Hubert Curtis, 88, died March 29, 2010. Born August 2, 1921 in Syracuse, NY, he moved to Jacksonville from Wayne, NJ in the late 1980s upon retirement from his banking career with United Jersey Bank.
"Hu" made lifetime friends in the band at Nottingham H.S. in Syracuse who he reconnected with at Syracuse University after World War II.
An enlistee in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, Hu was shipped out from NY to England on the Queen Mary on D-Day. His unit served in post-invasion Normandy and France, where he rose to Technical Sergeant.
Hu graduated magna cum laude from Syracuse University in 1949. He met his future wife, Nancy Noreen, at Syracuse and enjoyed being in the SAE fraternity with his closest Nottingham H.S. friends.
Hu and Nancy married in 1949, started their married life in Flushing, NY, but moved to the suburbs of New Jersey, where they spent most of their adult life raising their two daughters, Margaret and Elaine, at Packanack Lake in Wayne. While Hu was moving up in his banking career to SVP and Senior Credit Officer at United Jersey Bank, he also enjoyed singing in the choir at St. Michael's Episcopal, participating in the Packanack Lake Players, being a member of the Elks Club, and announcing the Packanack Lake swim meets. He took pride in his knowledge of history and his financial acumen. Annual family vacations brought them to Jacksonville, FL to visit Hu's in-laws, Ralph and Ruth Noreen, and eventually convinced him that Jacksonville was the perfect place for retirement.
After retirement, Hu became a volunteer with SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) and St. Luke's hospital, and joined the choir at All Saints and later Church of Our Savior Episcopal. After his first wife Nancy died, Hu moved for several years to New Orleans, LA to live near his daughter, Elaine and granddaughter Francesca. Hu then moved back to Jacksonville and married Jacksonville native, Harriet Farwell on May 23, 1998 at Church of Our Savior.
They shared a home in Mandarin until they moved to Cypress Village and just last year to Fleet Landing. As his health declined, Harriet's devotion to his care was incredible and much appreciated by other members of the family.
Survivors include his wife of 11 years Harriet Farwell Mott, daughters Margaret Watkins (John) and Elaine Urbina (Nic), step-son Robert Haas (Deena), step-daughter Elizabeth Haas, granddaughter Francesca Urbina, step-granddaughters Ashley Knebel and Haley Haas, step-great-granddaughter Rilyn Taylor, and nieces Linda Strand (Norman) and Sherrie Saltz (Mitch).
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 43 years, Nancy Noreen Mott, Sister Roberta Wehrfritz, and step-son Bruce Haas.
A Memorial Service will be held in Windward Commons at Fleet Landing, 1 Fleet Landing Boulevard, Atlantic Beach at 3 pm on Tuesday, April 6th, with Reverend John Palarine presiding.
