The 1850 Washington Township (Knox Co.) census shows William (21) and Mary Ann (20) lived at Dwelling #392 and the farm had a real estate value of $300.
According to the 1860 Census William and Mary Ann owned the farm with a House Number of 938 in Edwardsport. The land was valued at $1200 and their personal property was valued at $400. Two daughters were listed, Martha Ann (6) and Eliza J (2) which means Mary Ann was their mother.
William's younger brother Robert owned the farm next door (HN939).
The census shows William is 31, which means he was born in 1829 and that varies from other information I have seen that says he was born in 1825 or 1826 -TLE
Civil War Casualty
William was mustered in to the Union Army as a Private on 30 Aug 1861. He fought for Company B of the 26th Indiana Infantry Regiment. On 7 Dec 1862 the 2 armies collided at the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas on a ridge overlooking the Illinois River. The battle was ended by darkness and the Confederate Army retreated southward as its ammunition was nearly exhausted. William died from wounds received during this battle. This was the last Civil War engagement in NW Arkansas and ended the southern army's attempt to enter Missouri.
