As a young man, David joined the United Brethren church. He remained a member for the duration of his life.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth, on 24 February 1884, as well as a daughter, Mrs. E. H. Hurless, who resided at Thompson, Iowa.
David was survived by a son, Irving, of Vilas South Dakota; two daughters, Mrs. W. E. Fry and Mrs. Voris Richart both of Vinton, Iowa; one brother, Joseph Leamer of Missouri; three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Dilling of Vinton, Mrs. Delila Thomas of St. Cloud, Florida, and Mrs. Mattie Meister of DeWitt, Nebraska; and eleven grandchildren.
