John Doty was born in Ohio, the son of Daniel Doty and Elizabeth Crane. He married Margaret Reid Jewell, daughter of John D. Jewell and Catherine Reid on December 15, 1818 in Ohio. They lived in the Lemon Township of Butler, Ohio and had 9 children: Huldah, James, Lorenzo, Catherine, Sarah, Lucinda, Daniel, John, and Martha, all born in Ohio. The family moved to Iowa sometime between 1840 and 1850, probably around 1848. Once there, they settled in Cedar County where John was a farmer.
Around 1855 or 1856, John and Margaret separated and eventually divorced in April 1859. He married Miriam Burge Jewell on Nov 6, 1859. Together they adopted a son, Arthur Force. John continued to farm in Iowa until he became blind later in life.
John was a descendant of Edward Doty, who sailed on the Mayflower.
