Johann was a German cobbler who immigrated to Boston, MA on August 11, 1843. His parents were Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Langenbeck born 1771 at Wilstorf, Germany and Catherina Elisabeth Behr born 1790 at Ramelsloh, Germany. The other known children of Elis. Behr and Joh. Fried were Catharina Dorothea, Johann Wilhelm, Catharina Elisabeth, Sophia and Christian Hermann. Johann married Anna M. Hornung at Boston, MA in 1849. After the birth of his son Fredrick in 1863, the family went by ship to Nicaragua. After crossing the Isthmus on mule-back, they set sail for San Francisco. They Arrived in San Francisco on March 17, 1866
Johann became a naturalized US citizen in Boston, MA on October 15, 1852.
