Jean Mathieu Armbrust was the son of Antoine Armbrust and Barbara Moog. He came to America in 1839 with his wife, Marie Eve (Schweitzer) Armbrust, and their four sons. His name was anglicized to John Mathias Armbrust. They were natives of Bas-Rhin, Alsace. By 1840 the family had settled in Wayne twp, Muskingum County, Ohio and remained there until their deaths.

Four sons of John and Eva:
Nicholas Armbrust (1830-1911) m. Catherine Hoffer
Martin Armbrust (1832-1916) m. Sivina Phaler
George Armbrust (1833-1917) m. Catherine Fix
Anthony Armbrust (1836-1912) m. Josephine Roll

John Armbrust had a sister who also settled in Muskingum County, Barbara Armbrust (wife of Wendelin Sigrist) and a nephew as well, Phillip Armbrust (married Barbara Sigrist).
