Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company H, 48th New York Volunteer Infantry on June 24, 1861. Promoted to Captain and company commander on June 18, 1862, he led his men in the July 1863 assault on Battery Wagner in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, where he was wounded. He eventually served until his was honorably discharged on May 28, 1864.

He founded Sigma Chi fraternity at Miami University in Ohio 6/28/1855.

On October 20, 1871 his wife, Addie Lockwood, filed for a US Army Widow's Pension (Application #199715, Certificate #163577).
