Ray was the son of Peter Ray and Augusta Amelia Jorns McInnes. He married his step sister, Inez Viriginia Hensley 7 September 1930. They were the parents of George Raymond "Ray" McInnes, Lloyd "Murray" McInnes, Carol Lee Scott, Ernest Ray "Ernnie" McInnes, Virginia Agnes Wolfe, and Gene Darryl McInnes.
