Richard Schmidt was the s/o Theodor and Margaret (Powell) Schmidt. Siblings were John H., b. 1858, Dorothea "Dora" Henrietta, b. 6 Oct 1860, Margaret, b. 26 Aug 1862, Elizabeth, b. 6 Oct 1864, Robert, b. 1866, George, b. 28 May 1870, Anna Laura, b. 15 May 1873, and Martha Mary, b. 17 Sep 1875. The children were b. in Clyman, Dodge Co., WI.

Filed a claim for a 160-acre homestead near White Lake, Aurora Co., SD on 20 Aug 1898 and established a residence December 1898. Improvements consisted of a house 14 x 16 ft. with an addition 10 x 16 ft., barn, grainary 30 x 36 ft., well, and fence. Broke about 4 acres for a truck patch. Total estimated value was $700. Final approval of land entry occurred on 8 Nov 1905.

In early 1930, Richard traded his homestead in White Lake, Aurora Co., SD for a farm in Turlock, Stanislaus Co., CA to live near other family members who referred to him as "Uncle Dick".

Richard d. 25 Mar 1939 as a result of a fall from the roof of his barn. He was buried in an unmarked grave near other family members in Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson, Stanislas Co., CA. Richard never married and left no descendents.
