In early 1930, Richard traded his homestead in White Lake, Aurora Co., SD for a farm in Turlock, Stanislaus Co., CA to live near other family members who referred to him as "Uncle Dick".
Richard d. 25 Mar 1939 as a result of a fall from the roof of his barn. He was buried in an unmarked grave near other family members in Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson, Stanislas Co., CA. Richard never married and left no descendents.
