Merle Weaver Butler died Monday, May 22, 1989 at Methodist (Central) Hospital in Memphis. Her funeral service was at the Jonestown United Methodist Church and she was laid to rest in the Jonestown Cemetery. Rev. Bo Holloman, a family friend, along with Rev. Inge Halbert and Rev. Doug Hardin performed the service. McNeil Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Merle was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, but moved to Mississippi with her mother and three sisters after her father died in a hurricane in Texas.
She grew up in Crystal Springs and graduated from Mississippi Southern University. She taught for more than 27 years in the Clarksdale and Coahoma County school systems.
Merle Butler was a member of the Jonestown United Methodist Church, where she was serving on the Administrative Board, and as president of the United Methodist Women.
In addition to her husband, M. M. "Snooky" Butler, Merle was survived by her son G. W. "Bunky" Butler of Clarksdale; three daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Melton of Greenwood, Mrs. Merlyn Dodson of Clarksdale, and Miss Anne Butler of Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Jordon of Hazelhurst, and Mrs. Willie Dee Little of Jackson; and seven grandchildren, George W. Butler Jr. And Allison Butler, of Clarksdale, Floyd Melton III, Moss Melton, and Blewett Melton of Greenwood, Rob Dodson and Lyn Dodson, both of Clarksdale.
