John Smith Wootters M.D. was the oldest child of Captain John Henry Wootters and Berta Smith Wootters to reach adulthood. He was named for his maternal grandfather and was born on Oct.3, 1870 on the plantation of his grandparents at Smith's Landing on the Trinity River in Houston County. When he was seven years old his family moved to Crockett. After graduating from the local schools he received his college edudation at the University of Texas at Austin. Upon finishing there he entered the medical branch of Tulane University in New Orleans to prepare for his chosen profession, graduating in the class of 1891 with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. He attended Jefferson Medical College in the city of Philadelphia and received another Doctor of Medicine degree in 1892. This desire to attain the best training possible was paramount throughout his career as he used every opportunity to take post graduate courses in order to stay abreast of rapid developments in medicine.
Dr. Wootters returned from Jefferson Medical to Houston County to open his office. On that day he could not foresee
that his service would span fifty-eight years, from
horse-and-buggy to airplane, busy until his last illness interrupted
his practice.For thirty of these years Dr. Wootters was associated with Dr. Edgar B. Stokes who died in 1931.
On April 21, 1897 the young physician took as his bride Sue Craddock, the daughter of Henry Frank Craddock and Angeline Murchison Craddock. It was their privilege to celebrate fifty-three years of marriage.
The Wootters were faithful members of the First Baptist Church where he, like his father, was a deacon for many years.
He belonged to the Masons. Both the Lothrop Lodge and Trinity Chapter. Scotish Rites Mason and member of El Mina Shrine of Galveston.

He and Sue were the parents of three boys.
