Funeral services will be held from the Dial Funeral Home at Goliad at 4 o'clock this afternoon for James L. Tally, 60, Goliad postmaster and former editor of the Goliad Advance-Guard, who died at a local hospital at 8:05 o'clock Saturday morning following a heart attack. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Goliad and Dr. R. A. McCurdy, pastor of the Goliad Presbyterian Church, will officiate.
Mr. Tally and a friend Victor Albrecht, former Victorian, had gone to Port O'Connor on a fishing expedition Friday. Friends said he became suddenly ill Saturday morning. He died shortly after arrival at the hospital.
A native of Goliad, Mr. Tally was born September 4, 1887, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Tally. His father was a Confederate veteran and also served as editor of the old Goliad Guard for many years.
James Tally was editor of the Guard from 1912 until it was sold to a corporation in 1916 and merged with the Goliad Advance. He returned to the Advance-Guard in 1920, purchasing a half interest with John Weber, present publisher. Tally was a past president of the South Texas Press Assn. and the Texas Editorial Assn. He was appointed postmaster in August, 1934.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Merl Gentry Tally; a son, James L. Tally Jr., of Kingsville; two daughters, Mrs. Frances Clair Denham of Goliad and Mrs. Margery Ogden of New Orleans, La., and two grandchildren.
