Mr. John Robert Blackburn, 79, of Whiteville, died Thursday, March 25, 2010 at his residence. He was born November 8,1930 in Columbus County, the son of the late Samuel Hilton & Lizzie Polk Blackburn. He was a graduate of Williams Township High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean conflict. He was married to his wife, Geraldine Garrell, since 1952 and he served as a deacon, teacher and choir member of Trinity Baptist Church.
A funeral service with military honors will be conducted 3:00 PM, Sunday, March 28, 2010 at Trinity Baptist Church by Rev. Stephen Bailey & Rev. Donald Hardwick. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Tabor City.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Garrell Blackburn; a son, John Robert Blackburn, Jr. of Carolina Beach, NC; two daughters, Annette Powell & husband, Pat, and Robin Holt, all of Whiteville; eight grandchildren, Amos Holt & fiance, Holly, Faith Cribb & husband, Joe, Libby Willoughby & husband, Michael, Brooke Campbell, 2 LT. Clint Campbell & wife, Dana, Patrick Powell & fiance, Jackie, Eric Powell and Heather Blackburn & fiance, A.J.; six great grandchildren, A.J. Willoughby, Kasey Willoughby, Emma Cribb, Conor Cribb, Hope Felmlee and Matthew Felmlee. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Paul Blackburn; three sisters, Thelma Spivey, Louise Graham and Edith Gray Watts.

The family will receive friends 6:30 to 8:30 PM, Saturday, March 27, 2010 at Peacock Funeral Home.

The family would like to express a special thank you for the service and attention that was given by Dr. Yubin Kang, Community Health Care & Hospice, Tracy Gore, Annie Snowden and Amy Dudley.
