John built many homes in and around Cameron, WV including the Jobinger house in Greene Valley, Cameron, the house and store in Clouston (said to be framed in two days by John and brother George), and the Barnhart house across from the John Riggs house in Cameron. John worked for the B & O Railroad as a boss. He built bridges, depots, and water towers. He was forced to retire because of a bad heart. John was the husband of Jennie B. Morris Mathews Chambers and son of Henry Robert Chambers and Mary Elizabeth Phillips Chambers.
