Calvin B. Baird, 71, of 419 Cherry Avenue, Altoona, who enlisted in the Army at 14 for duty in World War I, died at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 26, 1973 at Altoona Hospital, where he was admitted June 20, after an extended illness. Baird had claimed to be the youngest veteran of World War I in this area.
He retired in 1969 as construction engineer for the Pennsylvania Department of Highways.
He was born April 29, 1902, in Altoona, the son of Blair C. and Mary (Burns) Baird, and married Minnie Snack on Jan. 3, 1922, in Hollidaysburg.
Surviving are his wife, six children, George W. of Mill Creek, John F. of East freedom, Theodore T. and Mrs. Shirley Coxey of Altoona and Mrs. Dorothy Pandolfino and Mrs. Geraldine Sheffield of Huntingdon, 21 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The deceased was first stationed at Ft. Ethan Allen, Vt. As a member of troop B, 18th Calvary. After seven months training, he was sent to Battery D, 76th field Artillery, Camp Shelby, Miss. He said from France on April 14, 1917, from Camp Merritt, N. J.
He was a member of the American Legion, Juniata.
