Four little children who started for the Harlandale Presbyterian Church Sunday morning arrived there Monday in four white sealed caskets and accompanied by more than 1,000 grief-stricken playmates, relatives and friends.
Sylvan Book, 14; Mary Book, 5; Winifred Book, 12 and Susie Clark, 12, victims of San Antonio's most tragic accident, were laid to rest Monday in San Jose Burial Park, after a touching display of community grief in the little suburban church they had attended.
Joint funeral services for all four were conducted by Rev. C. D. Bates, pastor of the church, hardly able to carry out his duties because of his close personal friendship for the victims, Rev. H. P. Bates, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church, assisted.
Ruth Clark, sister of Susie, was the only one of the four survivors of the crash able to attend the services. H.L. Thompson, driver of the truck carrying the children to church which collided with a Katy train at the Probrandt Street crossing, is prostrated with shock and grief at his home. He was but slightly injured. Audrey and Thelma Sotomayor, also injured in the crash, were unable to leave their beds.
Mr. and Mrs. Cloyd Book, 431 West Baylor Street, robbed of their entire family in one stroke, were present at the funeral and Mrs. Book had to be assisted in and out of the church. She followed her children to the grave side and stood mute as her two sons and daughter were laid to their last rest.
Mrs. Ollie Clark, mother of Susie, recently bereft of her husband, and now left with but one daughter, also was present surrounded by a group of friends.
Pallbearers were chosen from among members of the church and Sunday school children that attended. They were:
M. M. Hensley, W. R. Aren, C. R. King, Charles Kenyon, R. L. Thompson, G. L. Abernathy, Alex Balderos, Olen Thompson, James McElvey, Eugene Belbrey, Woodrow Mahavier, Preston Reeves, Billy Brenemann, Edmond Weynand, Marvin Fincke, Wilford Thompson, Bill Buckelew, Caharles Ball, W. J. Brenemann, H. G. Hynes, R. G. Elhel, J. J. Laux, W. L. Gillette, C. W. Downey and Carl R. Dorow.
A firl's choir of 30 voices from the Joel Chandler Harris School, attended by all four of the victims, sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and Near the Cross" during the services.
At the cemetery, the three caskets bearing the Book children were lowered into three adjoining graves simultaneously while the casket bearing Susie Clark waited at the lot. Huge banks of spring flowers gathered from the homes of friends blanketed the caskets.
Susie Clark's body was then taken about 100 yards from the resting place of her playmates and laid to rest beside her father who died not long ago.
