Rachel Walker Persons Birdsong, age 93, died Monday, March 22, 2010, at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle.
Rachel Birdsong was born in Monticello on January 10, 1917, the only child of Roy and Edith Persons. She attended elementary and high school here and graduated from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. She began what would become a long teaching career in 1938.
In 1942 she married Jackson Holt Birdsong of LaGrange, Georgia, who served in the Pacific during World War II as a Lieutenant Senior Grade in the U.S. Navy. Jack's military service and his work as an industrial engineer in the textile industry took Rachel, and eventually her sons Jay and David, to residences in Oklahoma, California, Michigan, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Colombia South America, and Quebec Canada. In 1957 Rachel and her family moved to Monticello to stay.
For thirty-four years "Miss Rachel" taught first grade in Georgia public schools. For hundreds of children over those years, first grade was all about "the 4 R's"—Readin', Ritin', 'Rithmetic, and Rachel. A nurturing teacher, she had a knack for bringing out the best in young children. She was a tamer of rowdy boys and a role model for impressionable girls. She gave her students an education that would set them on a straight course for the rest of their lives. Those little first graders grew up and made their teacher proud. By the time she retired in 1982, "Miss Rachel" was a legend. No teacher was ever more loved, more revered, or more appreciated.
After retirement Rachel found fulfillment in her roles as friend and confidante, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was firm in her desire to stay in Monticello, surrounded by people who would do anything in the world for her. Her last four years were spent in the comfort of Edgewood Assisted Living.
Rachel touched the lives of so many and was in turn touched by them. For countless gifts of love and caring, she was profoundly moved and eternally grateful.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Jay and Zohara Birdsong Shir of Jerusalem and David and Judy Birdsong of Austin, Texas; granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Tamar and Amichai Har-Even, Dafna and Ohad Vertesh, Nadia Shir, and Elizabeth Walker Birdsong; and great grandchildren, Meiri Har-Even, Eila Har-Even, Lavi Har-Even, Itai Vertesh, Eyal Vertesh, and Ophir Vertesh.
