Gladys Gail Nichol was born on February 21, 1915 in Murray, Iowa, the daughter of David and Jennie (Phay) Donaldson. She was raised in the Colfax area. Gladys was united in marriage to Walter Van Nichol on June 16, 1934 at her parent's house in Colfax. The couple moved many times before finally settling in Knoxville in 1961. She began working at Collins Hospital as a nurse aid, a job she held for 26 years, and retired at the age of 70. Walter passed away in 1995.

Gladys was active in the Garden Club. She enjoyed playing cards and having neighbors and friends over to visit. She was also a wonderful cook and had many requests for her apple pies. Most of all, she loved her family and looked forward to seeing her grandchildren.

Gladys passed away Monday, November 7, 2011 at Griffin Nursing Center in Knoxville at the age of 96 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter; infant daughter, Beverly; sons, Walter Dale and James Ray Nichol; granddaughter, Jennifer Nichol; great-grandson, Joel Minnihan; and siblings, Clifford Donaldson, Frances Miller and Phay Donaldson.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Jerry (Patty) Nichol of Knoxville; grandchildren, Pam Nichol, Julie Minnihan, Andy Nichol, Robin Shemanski, Cathy Meritt, John Nichol, ZoAnn Thompson, Neil Nichol and Beverly Michelsen; great-grandchildren, Jeremy Manser, Amy Shemanski, Nikki Figland, Kayla and Jacob Nichol, Brenna and Seth Meritt, James Thompson, Kelli Hanson, Haley and Caitlin Nichol and Cody Michelsen; great-great-grandchildren, Madison Hammen, Aubrey Hanson and Angel and Abigale Hawkins; daughters-in-law, Barb Nichol and Carole Nichol; sisters-in-law, Irene Bartholomew, Doris Nichol and Marylou Nichol; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 11, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Knoxville. The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in McKeever Cemetery in rural Colfax at 2 p.m. on Friday.
