Financier & Philanthropist He was an important investor in the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and used the railroad during the Civil War to transport Union troops to the front. In addition, he was president of Merchant's Bank. Upon his death he left 7 million dollars to fund many institutions including Johns Hopkins University, Johns Hopkins Press, and Johns Hopkins Hospital.
