Clifford G. (Kip) Lyle, 52, of Main Street, Hickory, died yesterday while on one of two calls that were answered by the Mt. Pleasant Township Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Lyle drove a water tank truck to the property of Gailey Wilson, Hickory where a grass fire was burning out of control. He backed the truck into the driveway and as he climbed from the cab, he collapsed. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Clifford G. Lyle was born June 23, 1903, in Mt. Pleasant township, a son of J. E. Lyle of Hickory and the late Mary Neill Lyle, and had lived in Hickory his entire life. He was employed as manager of the implement department of Allison Brothers Hardware Company, Hickory and was a charter member of the Hickory Lions Club and a member of the Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department and Mt. Prospect Presbyterian Church, Hickory. Surviving in addition to his father, are his wife Ellen McCalmont Lyle; two brothers, Robert R., College Station, Texas; Donald N., Hickory and a sister, Mrs. Anna Lee, Hickory. Services will be Saturday March 16 at the Speakman Funeral Home, Houston with the Rev. W. A. Hadden officiating. Burial in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Hickory. - Washington Reporter, March 14, 1957.
