Her parents were Mary Catherine Shannon and Thomas C Gage. Soon after her birth, her mother died and she was raised by her grandparents David C Shannon and Mildred Bartlett. "Milly" died about 1875. David married Ellen Payne. They continued to care for and nurture Alice until her marriage to Anderson. Census reports show Alice living with David C Shannon and each of his 2 wives as well as Ellen's son (John Marion Payne) and his two daughters (Edna and Ollie).
