Frances Drenik Novak, 94, of Brentwood, Calif., formerly of Strabane, Pa., died Saturday, May 11, 1991 in Tracy, Calif. She was born Dec. 19,1896, in Sao Paolo, Brazil, a daughter of Andrej and Marija Serca Podboy. At the age of three, she moved to Austria with her family. At the age of 16, she emigrated to the U.S. where she lived most of her life in Strabane, Pa.
Mrs. Novak was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Canonsburg.
With her family, she owned the Drenik Park in Strabane. From 1935 to 1951, she owned the Colony Grill in Canonsburg.
Mrs. Novak was a member of KSKJ St. Jerome Lodge 153, SNPJ Lodge 138, Pensioners Club and AFU Lodge, all of Strabane.
Her first husband, Frank Drenik, died in 1942. Her second husband, Joseph Novak, died in 1970.
Surviving are two sons, Frank Drenik of West Mifflin, Pa., and Joseph Drenik of Brentwood Calif., with whom she made her home; a daughter, Mary Buchanan of Las Vegas, Nev,; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the last of her immediate family. Deceased are sons, William J. Drenik, who was killed in action in Italy during World War II, and Rudy, who died during infancy; and four sisters, Johanna Verhovnik, Anna Modoijan, Marija Vidrih and Justina Kern.

Regarding the location of the Colony Grill, it became a restaurant in 1932, soon after Prohibition was lifted, advertising “Free Beer, Coffee or Soup with every 40¢ meal.” Shortly thereafter, fire burned out the restaurant. It reopened at the end of June 1934 and advertised "We Never Close" in the 1941 high school yearbook.
