VERONA — S'Sgt. Francis Klein has been honored by the Presidential Citation awarded to his unit. The citation reads in part "On the date selected for the mission, the flying personnel chosen to participate in the attack on the Ploesti oil refiners demonstrated the greatest personal bravery, flying skill and performance of the mission despite unforeseen developments and difficulties encountered en route." On the completion of the 200th mission "against the enemy in strategic support of the Allied forces in the Middle East and North African theaters of war from 2 June, 1942 to 14 December. 1943." his unit was highly commended. Sgt. Klein has been honorably discharged and is now recuperating at his home at Hammond, N. Y. He plans to enter St. Lawrence University in the fall. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Klein, formerly of Verona, and now of Hammond. Before entering the service in January. 1942. Francis worked in the Tube Mill.

Francis E. Klein, 86, of Homosassa, Fla., died on Tuesday Nov. 7, 2006, in Tampa, Fla. He was born in Verona, N.Y., and went to Florida in 2004 from Clarksburg, W. Va. Mr. Klein had lived in Florida for two years. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. Surviving are three sons, Francis Klein Jr. of Canastota, Richard L. Curtis of Canastota, and Mark Klein of Canastota, three daughters, Diane Musacchio of Canastota, Linda Boylan of Canastota and Kimberly Morrison of Homasassa, Fla.; 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
