James W. Jackson Moore, one of the sons, owned Moore's Hotel in Leonardtown at the time of the Civil War. This hotel was "well known" as a gathering place to smuggle men from Southern Maryland to Virginia to serve in the CSA. Two of his sons fought for the Confederacy and son Warren was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg.
