Mathias was born in August 1866 in Moyeuvre Grande, Lorraine, France to Louis and Helen (Hewer) Bertels. In the mid-1880s, he immigrated with his family to the US. They settled in Massillon, Ohio and worked in the coal mines.
In 1900, Mathias married Daisy Lee Chandler in Springfield, IL. After the birth of two daughters, Bessie and Helen, they moved to Yankee, NM, where Mathias continued to work as a coal miner. By 1911, Mathias and his family, now including a son, Alvis, moved to Deer Trail. Colorado. Mathias and Daisy had two more sons, Leo and Louis. In 1925, Mathias died of black lung.
Mathias' grandson, Charles, said that it was reported he could speak five languages including French, German, and English.
