Katie Marie Pierce was born on October 2, 1947 in Citronelle, AL to Jerry Pierce Jr & Mamie Elizabeth Gartman Pierce. She was the youngest of seven children.
She married Donald Raymond Grantham on April 27, 1965, and had one daughter Donna Kaye born on July 17, 1968. Katie and Don were divorced in 1970.
She was employed by RCA in Florida for several years before plant layoffs forced her to move back to her hometown of Citronelle.
On December 15, 1971, she along with her daughter and her oldest sister Joyce Estelle Riordan were returning home from a shopping trip in Mobile Alabama when they were involved in an automobile accident which killed Katie and Joyce and seriously injured Donna Kaye.
Katie was survived by her daughter Donna Kaye, her parents Jerry and Mamie Pierce,her grandmother Viola Boothe, one brother Jerry Miles Pierce, four sisters: Jeraline Martin, Bobby Pierce, Betty Shadrach, and Carolyn Walker, nieces, nephews, and other relatves.
Funeral services for both Katie and her sister Joyce were held at Freeman Funeral Home in Citronelle on December 18, 1971 with interment following at Lambert Cemetery. She was 24 years old.
Personal note--she was my mother but I never knew her. I was three and a half years old when she died and have virtually no memories of her at all. I was raised by her parents Jerry & Mamie. I have heard alot of stories about her from different people and know that she was a wonderful person.
