Newton Baker,84,was the son of the late Lois E. Baker and Fred H. Baker, Sr. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Robert R. and Fred H. Jr. He is survived by three first cousins; Lois MacKinney of Loveland, CO., Jean Slight of New Port Richey, FL., and Gwendolyn Brunkhorst of Jonesboro, AK.
He was Born in Monroe County, Missouri, he moved to Columbia at the age of 14. He spent two years in the Army special services, traveling with an entertainment unit.
He played the trumpet in a dance band while studying journalism at Missouri University. He is an honor graduate of the University of Missouri, School of Journalism and a member of two scholastic fraternities plus Phi Delta Theta social fraternity.
He served two years on the advertising staff at Sears headquarters in Chicago. Moving to Kansas City, he joined Black, Sivalls, and Bryson (BS&B) as Assistant Advertising Manager and progressed to a Vice Presidency. He was very active in Kansas City Civic and professional organizations. He served as Governor (5 states) of the Advertising Federation of America (now American Advertising Federation). He was named Advertising Man of the Year after serving as general chairman of a large advertising convention in Kansas City.
In Saint Louis, he became President of a privately held marketing services company, later acquired by International Industries of Los Angeles. It's flagship operation was International House of Pancakes (IHOP). In 1972, he became President and General Manager of Management Recruiters, overlooking the Lambert Airport - first in the Ozark Airlines Executive Building and later in the Drury Building. His staff of recruiting consultants was active in a number of specialties including data processing and engineering. Baker sold his business to Management Recruiters International in 1988 in order to take care of several family members in declining health situations. He was active in the Bethel United Church of Christ.
