American Revolutionary War General. Born in Magdeburg, Germany, he arrived in America in 1778 to aid the nation in its fight for independence. A former Prussian Army officer, he offered his services to General George Washington and was appointed by Congress Inspector General of the Army to train the unorganized soldiers. He infused the Continental Army with a sense of discipline and converted them into an excellent fighting force that resulted in victory over the British Army. His manual "Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States," still remains in the basic guide for the discipline and drill of the U.S. Army. He became an American citizen and lived in New York until his death.
