Dudley, Remmel H. (Age 92) retired Vice President of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, died on February 19, 2010 at the Goodwin House, BC of Falls Church. He lived in Falls Church and had been a resident of Northern Virginia since 1957. Mr. Dudley opened the Government Relations Office for Metropolitan Life in Washington in 1964 and handled the company's federal legislative programs. He was active in many business, legislative, and community organizations, and served on various committees of the American Council of Life Insurance. He retired in 1983. In 1942 Mr. Dudley was commissioned in the U.S. Marines. During the early part of World War II, as a Lieutenant, he was assigned to the Marine Detachment aboard the U.S.S. Helena, a cruiser, and was a turret officer. His ship was sunk by three Japanese torpedoes during the night battle of Kula Gulf in the South Pacific in July 1943. With other survivors he returned to the States, and went overseas again with the Fifth Marine Division. As an artillery Battery Commander he landed with the assault troops on Iwo Jima and remained throughout the campaign. After the war he served with the occupation forces in Sasaebo, Japan. He also served as an artillery officer during the Korean War. He completed his military service as an attorney in the Office of the Judge Advocate General of the Navy and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and several lower courts. Mr. Dudley was born in Clay County, Arkansas, but moved to Jonesboro with his parents, Judge and Mrs. Robert H. Dudley, as an infant. He attended public schools in Jonesboro and was graduated from the University of Arkansas with Bachelor of Science in Law and Juris Doctor degrees. Mr. Dudley was formerly a lector and usher at the Falls Church (Episcopal), a past president of the Arkansas State Society, a past president of Ravenwood Civic Association, a member of the 116 Club, Sigma Chi social fraternity and Delta Theta Phi legal fraternity. He was an Emeritus Member of the Association of Life Insurance Counsel, and was formerly on the Board of Directors of the local Multiple Sclerosis Society Chapter, and the Board of the Washington Animal Rescue League. Mr. Dudley was a long-time member of the Mystick Krewe of Louisianians which sponsors the annual Mardi Gras Ball in Washington. He was given the Golden Krewe Bag Award in 1988 for his service to this organization. An avid traveler, he visited six continents, over 100 foreign cities, and 50 states. He is survived by his wife, the former Sunshine (Sunny) VerPlanck, of Tampa, a nephew Judge Robert H. Dudley of Little Rock, nieces Charlotte Dratch of Sarasota, Florida, and Roberta Arvani of Caswell Beach, N.C. and several great nieces and nephews. Memorial Services will be held Friday February 26, 2010 at 2:00pm at the Goodwin House, B.C, 3440 S. Jefferson St., Falls Church, VA 22041. Mr. Dudley will be interred w/ honors in Arlington National Cemetery-Columbarium Thursday March 4, 2010 at 1:00pm.
