Obituary - Ruth Mariane Greenwell Abbott, 86, our kind and beautiful mother, Grammy, sister, aunt, and friend passed way on February 16, 2005 at Orchard Cove nursing facility in Bountiful, Utah. Ruth was born in Ogden, Utah, on August 14, 1918, to Thomas Clyde Greenwell and Sarah Lenora (Leah) Pardoe Greenwell. She attended Ogden High School, Weber College, and BYU, receiving a B.A. degree in Education in June 1940. She taught elementary school for 2 years.
On August 25, 1941, she married Fredric Maurice Abbott in the Salt Lake Temple. During World War II, Ruth volunteered as a Nurses Aide, while Fred was serving in the U.S. Navy in Washington, D.C. In 1949, after Fred accepted a position with General Mills, the family move to Monterey Park, California, where they developed many lasting friendships. The Abbotts relocated to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1955, where Fred worked at the General Mills Flour Division general office.
Ruth was actively involved in church activities and community service, again, making many dear and lasting friendships. In 1965, the family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area (Mountain View and Walnut Creek). Fred retired from General Mills in 1980, after which Fred and Ruth returned to their city of birth, Ogden, Utah.
Ruth was a woman without guile, who will always be remembered for her compassion and sensitivity to the feelings of others. She was always for the underdog. Her children were amazed with how their mother maintained close contact with the numerous friends she and Fred had made over the years during their moves throughout the country. The hundreds of Christmas cards she would receive each December is legendary.
All were welcome in her home, and no one left hungry. Her family could not have asked for a more loving and caring mother and Grammy. Ruth's grandchildren will always remember the fun Russian Rummy and Scrabble games with their Grammy. She cherished her friends from Chareya (service club), her bridge club, and her ceramics club. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Ruth is survived by her children and their spouses: Tom Abbott(Linda), Anne Allen (John), and Bob Abbott (Cristy); 14 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Myrene Van Dyke (Bill) and numerous nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Fred, her parents, and her brother Clyde Greenwell.
Funeral services will held at Larkin and Sons Mortuary (496 24th Street, Ogden) on Saturday, February 19, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. Friends and relatives may call at the mortuary on Saturday prior to the services from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. Interment will be in the Farmington City Cemetery.
The family expresses their sincere thanks to the staff of Orchard Cove in Bountiful, who were wonderful in the care they gave Ruth and their kindness toward the family.
