Mr. Reed was born in Orangeburg County, a son of the late Rudolph Hildebrand and Flossie Cole Reed. He served in the Navy during WWII on the USS George Clymer and in recent years founded and supported the George Clymer Scholarship Fund for deserving high school seniors. He was a 1952 Clemson graduate and was employed by DuPont, Savannah River Plant as a Health Physics Supervisor for 40 years. He also enjoyed farming. He served as deacon of the First Baptist Church of North and the First Baptist Church of Williston. He taught Sunday school and served as a member of the choir. He fully supported Gideon's International, the Lion's Club, the American Legion, and Livingston Christian Academy.
He was predeceased by his wife, Thelma Livingston Reed of North, and later married Mary K. Jowers Reed of Williston. He was also predeceased by three sisters: Elizabeth Conner Knotts, Pauline Livingston, and Rose McCormick Dawkins, and one brother, Ralph Cole Reed.
Survivors include his son, Russell Reed; a daughter, Ronda (Tony) Smith; one grandson, Chuck Smith; one granddaughter, Candice (Larry) Shull; two great-grandsons, Channing Smith and Mattox Shull, all of North; two step-sons, Ronnie (Kay) Jowers of Atlanta, Brian (Cindy) Jowers of Greenville, NC; one step-daughter, the late Nancy J. (Lee) Zeigler; six step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.
