Z.R. Howard was a farmer, county judge, hotel owner, and grocery store owner. After selling his farm in Clay County, KY, in the early 1900s, he moved to Corbin, KY, where he owned and operated the Howard Hotel, which included a pool parlor and candy store. It was also in Laurel County that he served as county judge at some point (probably around 1907-08).
In 1919, G.M. Smith began contruction of hotel on an adjoining lot to the Howard Hotel. The exacavation of this property resulted in the collapse of the Howard Hotel. No one was killed, but the building was a total loss and records indicate that Z.R. Howard never collected the settlment won in his lawsuit against Smith.
In the following years, Z.R. Howard, and later with his son Israel, ran a small grocery store on their farm property on a highway outside of Corbin, KY. He lived on that farm until his death in 1954.
