A Brazil resident died Saturday evening after being struck by a vehicle.

At approximately 6:54 p.m., Saturday, officers with the Clay County Sheriff's Department and Brazil City Police Department responded to an automobile accident involving a pedestrian on State Road 340.

According to reports, a vehicle, driven by Jonathan C. Orten, 46, Brazil, was traveling east on SR 340 when he struck Roxanne L. Buescher, 25, Brazil.

Clay County Coroner Joel Reinoehl pronounced Buescher dead at the scene.

Orten told officials he did not see anything but felt something hit his vehicle. He then turned around to go back.

According to a report provided by CCSD, a witness stated he witnessed Buescher in the roadway bending over doing "something."

The report stated the witness asked Buescher if she needed help, to which she responded "yes."

However, at that moment, the vehicle driven by Orten came over a hill. The witness then began yelling to Buescher to get out of the road and started running toward her.

The report stated Buescher was attempting to remove her dog from the roadway after it had been hit by another vehicle.

Due to the nature of the accident, a breathalyzer test was administered to Orten, which was found negative. No citations have been issued.

Assisting in the crash were TransCare, the Posey Township Fire Department, Clay County Search and Rescue and the Knightsville Town Marshal.
