Note: The large Boreman family cenotaph at Wethersfield (20495823) states: "Mr. Samuel Boreman First Ancestor of the Boardman Family." All of Samuel and Mary (Betts) Boreman's sons who died prior to 1713 (Joseph, John, Jonathan and Nathaniel) who left a probate record were known by the surname of Boreman. Then, prior to 1720 for unexplained reasons the three surviving sons of the family (1st born son Isaac, 2nd born son Samuel and 5th born son Daniel) used the surname Boardman, with their respective gravestones inscribed either as Bordman or Boardman. Thereafter the family name became uniformly Boardman. It would seem appropriate to assume that the maiden name of Samuel and Mary's daughters who were living after 1712 also adopted the maiden name of Boardman commensurate with their surviving brothers.

Mary Boardman {formerly Boreman}, eldest dau. of Samuel Boreman & Mary Betts, b. Feb. 14, 1644/5 at Wethersfield, Conn. She d. intestate May 18, 1721 at Wethersfield, Æ 77.

Mary m. 1) Apr. 24, 1675 at Wethersfield, John Robbins, Jr., s. of Gent. John Robbins & wife Mary, b. Sept. 20, 1649 at Wethersfield. He d. testate July 10, 1689, Æ 40. They had five known children who are summarized in their father's memorial.

Mary m. 2) before Mar. 7, 1698/9 (the date she presented husband John Robbin's will and 10-year old estate inventory to the Hartford Probate Court under the name of Mary Dension) an unknown Denison and died testate May 18, 1721 at Wethersfield by the name of Mary Denison. Only one male Denison left an estate record in the Hartford Probate District through 1750 - George of Hartford, Conn. in 1695. However, George's 2nd wife, Ann Borodell, was still living in 1695. Stiles in his Ancient Wethersfield claims Mary's Denison husband was from Roxbury, Mass., but neither record of a corresponding marriage nor related probate record can be found there. While there were Denison families residing at Roxbury, Mass. in 1699, Mary's 2nd husband may have been much closer in New London County, Conn. where numerous Denison families had resided since the mid-1600s. By her will, her three surviving sons Joshua, Samuel and Richard Robbins inherited her estate, which for a widow was inventoried at a very respectable £376-05-04.

Inscription

Until after the year 1800, this cemetery was the only cemetery within the Town of Wethersfield's Ecclesiastical First Church Society. Inventoried in 1899 by Tillotson and published under the title "Wethersfield Inscriptions," the widow Mary (Boardman) (Robbins) Denison's gravestone, if she previously had one, was not extant.
