Kevin was born the youngest of 4 children. He was a cute and funny boy with "copper penny" red hair, big brown eyes, and a giggle that was contagious. He was full of spunk and energy and was referred to as "perpetual motion". He made friends easily and grew up to enjoy sports of all kinds. He grew to be a beautiful, strong, athletic, smart & popular young man. He was a joy to many. He had energy & humor that drew people to him. He was respected by many peers and adults. He cared deeply for others and even helped those who he barely knew feel included. He had a gift of working with children. He disliked the shallow and superficial and gravitated away from those who took advantage of others. He was a talented athlete, winning a most valuable player award his senior year of high school football. He graduated from high school with honors and began college.

Kevin loved his family and we loved him. He loved spending time with all of us and especially loved vacationing with the entire family on the island of St. John.

A situation happened his first year of college, that caused Kevin to question his character. He was overcome with guilt at hurting someone he cared deeply for and began a spiral downward into the dark cave of depression.

His journey into this dark cave ended with the taking of his own life in February 2010.

Kevin was loved by many. A facebook page "In loving memory of Kevin Buchman" is testiment to that fact. There have been nearly 2000 visitors to that page and hundreds of postings, and yet even with all that love and admiration, Kevin ended up in the dark, desperate place of suicidal depression.

Depression is an illness, It is not invited or wished for. It is a disease that ravages the mind as cancer ravages the body. It is difficult to recognize. It is difficult to diagnose. It is difficult to treat. My son died from suicidal depression.

The pain that he felt before his passing is now felt by the many who have been left behind. Let us recognize that the face of suicide is among us. Let us accept that suicidal depression is an illness that needs to be fought.

Kevin was a beautiful, strong, athletic, smart and popular young man. He was a joy to many and had energy and humour that drew people to him. He was respected by peers and adults, cared deeply for and reached out to others. He loved his family and we loved him.

Depression is a treatable illness. It is not invited or wished for. It is a disease that ravages the mind as cancer ravages the body. It is difficult to recognize, diagnose, and to treat. Our son died from suicidal depression.

The pain that he felt before his passing is now felt by the many which have been left behind. Let us recognize that the face of suicide is among us. Let us accept that suicidal depression is an illness that needs to be spoken about openly and fought.
