MASSENA, Ia., June 24 - Clyde A. Smeltzer, Massena man, serving in an engineering corps in France, was killed in action on June 12 according to a message received by his relatives from the war department.
Was Civil Engineer
Young Smeltzer was 39 years of age. He was the son of H. F. Smeltzer of Massena and enlisted last summer. He was sent to France in September and had been in active service on the west front. His father is expected home today from a visit in Pennsylvania. Mrs. Smeltzer died some time ago. A brother, C. E. Smeltzer, resides here. Clyde had not resided here for several years.
Memorial services for Clyde A. Smeltzer will be held in Massena next Sunday. He was the first Massena man to fall on the battle front in the present war.
