CONCORD, NC — Mr. Philip Hamilton Smith Sr, 89, passed away Sunday January 24, 2010 at Hospice and Palliative Care after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis of the lungs.

A memorial service was held Friday, February 5 at 2 pm at All Saints Episcopal Church, 525 Lake Concord Road, NE Concord, NC. Father Roger Butler officiated.

An inurnment took place following the service in the church columbarium.

Mr. Smith was born September 16, 1920 in Washington, DC, son of the late Herbert H. and Dorothy Marschalk Smith.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, H. Herbert Smith, sister, Dorothy Lyman McNabb, niece, Karen Lyman, nephew, Carter Lyman Jr. and a grandchild, Baby Boy Loflin.

Mr. Smith grew up in Chevy Chase, MD and Miami Beach, FL, where he graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School; he then enlisted in the US Army Air Corps during WWII and became a B-24 Liberator pilot and was stationed in the Galapogos Islands.

After being honorably discharged in 1946, attaining the rank of Captain, Mr. Smith went on to graduate from John B. Stetson University in Deland, FL, in 1948; his degree was in Accounting. While there, he was the senior class president and played center for their basketball team.

He then began his career with Sears, Roebuck and Company in Miami, FL and was transferred many times throughout the years. After becoming the assistant manager for the Sears store in Greensboro, he was then transferred to Hickory in 1964, to become the store manager. In 1969 Mr. Smith opened the new Sears store in the Carolina Mall, in Concord, NC and retired from that store in 1980, after 32 years of dedicated service with Sears.

He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church where he previously served as senior warden for two years.

Survivors include his wife, Rae Crist Smith; daughter, Carole Loflin (Steve) of Greensboro; sons, Philip H. Smith Jr. (Pamela) of Hickory and Ronald C. Smith of Charlotte; grandchildren, Meredith Walthal(Brian), Lindsay Loflin Jr., Evan Logan (Matt), all of Greensboro and Johne Smith (Marleni) of Asheville; great-grandchildren, Alex, Emily and Claire Walthall, Lila Logan and Aili Smith; sisters, Helen Lewis (Jim) of Lewes, DE, Barbara Ditzel (Jack) of Ponte Vedra, FL; brother, Richard A. Smith of Victorville, CA.
