Three small children of a young Duncan widow whose husband was killed in a traffic accident a year ago died this morning in a fire which destroyed the family's modest home.
The widow, Mrs. Betty Gildon, fled to safety with her infant son. Dead are Floyd, 5; Curtis, 3; and Levonia, 2; who had been sleeping in a seperate bedroom from where Mrs. Gildon and the infant son slept. It was believed the victims died of suffocation. Bodies of the three children were found huddled under some clothing in a closet of a bedroom where they had slept. The children apparently had gone to the closet, which did not have a door, to escape the heat and smoke. C.C. Lawson, Duncan Fire Chief said, "a lot of burned matches" were found in the heavily damaged bedroom where the children had slept. He added it appeared the fire started in this room.
Mrs. Gildon's husband, Deverl, was killed in a one truck accident near Guthrie about this time last year.
Betty died August 11, 2002, in Indiana.
